The king of France, known as Saint Louis, embarked on a re-conquest of Aquitaine, a region of his kingdom that had been under English rule for many centuries. In 1638, the lord of Mouillepied, a seneschal, had to pay homage to the count of Taillebourg.During the 18th century, Château Mouillepied was expanded by Guillaume Clairins des Lauriers, the chief engineer of the Rochefort Arsenal and a knight of Saint Michel. The château transformed into a beautiful classical house with terraced gardens and ponds, all surrounded by elegant stone walls.
The name "Mouillepied" derives from the numerous springs found on the property. The château is situated just two kilometers away from the picturesque and historic village of Taillebourg, renowned for the famous Battle of Taillebourg in 1242, which was immortalized by Delacroix in 1837.
Today, Château Mouillepied serves as a residence, offering guesthouse bed and breakfast accommodations in the Charente-Maritime region. English is spoken by the owners. The château, originally built in the 15th and 18th centuries, has been restored with modern comforts while preserving its character. It is located in the heart of the Romanesque Saintonge region, 30 kilometers from Cognac and the Atlantic beaches of Royan and Île d'Oléron.
The château is conveniently situated 7 kilometers from Saintes, on the left bank of the Charente River, near exit 35 of the A10 motorway from Paris to Bordeaux (110 km) and the A837 from La Rochelle airport (65 km). The spacious and comfortable bedrooms overlook the park and are equipped with toilets, ensuite bathrooms or shower rooms, and a wide range of amenities.
On the ground floor of the château, guests can relax in the public lounges by the fireplace, or enjoy the peaceful and wooded landscape of the Charente in the orangerie. A variety of teas, herbal teas, coffee, and soft drinks are available free of charge in the evening. The château provides ample information about local tourism activities, such as fishing, hiking, vineyard visits, and bike rentals.
The park also features two self-catering accommodations with central heating. Additionally, there are many restaurants located nearby for guests to explore.
