Description:

Description for B&B:

Located in the picturesque Poitou Charentes countryside, just 60 km south of the Loire, you will find the charming medieval village of Airvault. At The Voltaire Bed and Breakfast, Jo Cottrell welcomes guests into their 19th Century mansion home, ensuring a warm and relaxed atmosphere.

Situated near the center of Airvault, The Voltaire offers four spacious and individually styled double and twin bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom. Our main focus is to ensure that your stay with us is enjoyable and comfortable, whether it's for a night, a few days, or even a week. Our guests often find themselves sleeping longer than expected due to the peaceful ambiance and comfortable amenities of The Voltaire. As a result, we offer breakfast until as late as 12pm.

Each of our guest bedrooms is equipped with an en-suite bathroom featuring a bath and shower. We provide luxurious thick bath sheets, hand towels, and handmade soaps. The bedrooms are furnished with either a kingsize bed or twin single beds, all adorned with 100% cotton bed linen and soft Egyptian cotton duvet covers. The deep-sprung mattresses ensure the perfect level of support and comfort. For families, we can arrange for a temporary bed to be added to your room for a child under 12. All rooms also offer ample storage space for your belongings, as well as comfortable seating.

The Voltaire also features a cozy library with an open fire during the winter months, offering a selection of books and board games. Additionally, we have a more tranquil sitting room with a cooler atmosphere.

When weather permits, guests can enjoy the outdoor space. The walled garden at the back of the property benefits from the morning sun, making it an ideal spot for breakfast on the lawn. As the day progresses, the garden provides shade during the hottest hours, ensuring a cooler environment. The front of the house features a raised swimming pool, perfect for sunbathing and relaxation during the warmer months.

Our continental breakfast includes freshly baked croissants and baguettes from local bakeries, Airvault honey, homemade marmalade and conserves, fruit juice, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.

Upon request, we also offer evening meals consisting of four courses, along with wine and/or soft drinks and coffee, for 22 euros per adult and 12 euros per child under 12. We strive to use seasonal and local ingredients, ensuring a varied menu that reflects the time of year. Picnic options are also available with prior notice.

In this idyllic and unspoiled part of France, we benefit from a high level of annual sunshine, second only to the Côte d'Azur. We are also located in the heart of the largest sunflower growing region in France.

Since we are on the outskirts of a village with stunning architecture, most amenities are within a short walk. These include bakeries, butcher shops, restaurants, bars, banks with cash machines, a chemist, and a local produce market every Saturday morning.

Surrounded by historic towns and villages, beautiful countryside, and swimming lakes, there are also major attractions nearby such as Futuroscope, a virtual reality theme park, Vallée des Singes, a monkey park where you can interact with the animals, Puy du Fou, a medieval theme park with spectacular shows, and La Venise Verte, a waterway system in Marais Poitevins that can be explored by flat-bottomed boats. Additionally, being only 60 km south of the Loire Valley, guests have easy access to numerous chateaux and vineyards. This is just a glimpse of what the area has to offer, and more details can be found on our website.

We provide unlimited free WiFi access, and you can make real-time bookings online through our website.

Directions

GPS coordinates:

Latitude: 46° 49' 32" N
Longitude: 00° 08' 21" W

For those coming from the direction of Poitiers, follow the D725 road into Airvault. Look for the signs directing you to Centre Ville. Pass the Gendarmerie on your right, continue downhill and pass the Church and Market Hall on your right. At the end of the road, you will reach a roundabout. Groupama will be on your right, and we are located directly opposite Groupama on the left. The Hotel du Cygne is also across from us. Look for the recycling bins on the corner next to our garage. Parking is available in front of our house/garage, but if it's full, you can use the public car park diagonally opposite on the other side of the roundabout.

If you are coming from Parthenay, Bressuire, or Thouars, join the D725 road towards Airvault. Ignore the first turning signposted Airvault centre ville with 4 flagpoles and the town's name in flowers at the junction. Keep going straight on the D725. Pass the town name and cross the river. Just after crossing the river, there will be a sharp right-hand corner with a left turn. Take this turn onto D27 Rue de la Gare. Cross the level crossing and keep left at the fork. This will bring you to a roundabout. The Hotel du Cygne will be on your right, a car park on your left, and on the third corner, you will find Groupama. We are the house on the other corner.
